I saw the word recreation and began to wonder…
is recreation a re-creation of something?
To the etymology!!
Not surprisingly, there are two definitions of recreation (and two pronunciations). One is /ˌrekrēˈāSH(ə)n/ – this is enjoyable non-work activity. It’s the recreation from rec-room and Parks and Rec. And then there is /ˌrēkrēˈāSH(ə)n/ which is to create something again.
The original latin recreare means to create again, to renew. While we have come to know recreation to be activity done for enjoyment while not working, I really love the late middle english definition: mental or spiritual consolation.
So let’s put these all together. If we begin to think of recreational activities as being for our mental or spiritual nourishment, it brings a level of attention and awareness to the why of recreation. Perhaps we get to re-create the state of our mind and spirit through recreational activities.
